For the First time in the History of our city, the City of London has proclaimed April as Sikh Heritage Month in London, ON. Guru Nanak Mission Society London, ON, a non for profit organization took initiative in this proclamation. This is to recognize the contribution that Sikh Canadians had made to the social, economic and cultural fabric along with the richness of Punjabi language and the Gurmukhi Script. It is an opportunity for all to reflect on, celebrate, educate and bring awareness to the future generation about the role of Sikh Canadians and continue its selfless service in the community.
Why April as Sikh Heritage Month?
In 2013, April was proclaimed as Sikh Heritage Month by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Bill 52)
Sikhs celebrate April 13th as Vaisakhi which marks birth of Khalsa and the Sikh articles of faith. It is a great opportunity to raise awareness and appreciation of Sikh-Canadians, the special and diverse heritage by celebrating the achievements and aspirations of all Sikh-Canadians. Sikhs have lived in London, ON for many years, and this is an opportunity to acknowledge their contributions to the province’s economic, social, and cultural structure.
