Activities

The Hindu Cultural Centre Of London Ontario is involved in a number of activities of relevance to the Indian Community in London as well as the wider cultural mosaic.

HCC Supports a very active roster of ceremonies, festivals, lectures, arts & cultural events and celebrations.

HCC also gets involved in community advocacy bringing forth events that are relevant to the issues that face our community, be they health related, or other. As an example, HCC recently ran a Diabetes Screening Clinic with clinical and educational sessions outlining the overall issues, risk factors, proper health prioritization and counselling.

There are two youth groups within the HCC - one for our youngest members, the Bal Vikas Group, and the other for our youths, the HCC Youth Group.

The Bal Vikas is primarily aimed at imbibing a sense of heritage and culture in our children and the modus operandi of the group is based on narratives, religious and mythological stories, music, songs and dance. The children learn through story-telling and are encouraged to turn their knowledge into performances at select HCC functions.

The HCC Youth Group is aimed at our youth who are in Secondary School Grades through to University Levels. The Youth Group gets involved in a number of HCC functions and activities and as well, they promote and work on projects and causes appropriate to their own interests.

The HCC has recently embarked upon the formation of a "Youth Scholarship Award", the objective of which is to recognize and promote excellence in academic, extra curricular activities and community participation of our youth graduating from high schools and encourage them to pursue higher studies.

The Spiritual Symbol of The Hindu Cultural Centre of London Ontario
By: Mr. Vijay Kumar

The spiritual symbol of the Hindu Cultural Centre is composed of several sacred symbols taken from the Shastras (scriptures) and then coalesced together. This symbol aptly represents the aims and objectives of the HCC.

An explanation and analysis of the symbol components follows:

The Text

"Athato Brahma Jijnasa" - Now, therefore the inquiry into the nature of the Brahman.

This is the first Sutra of the treatise known as Brahma-Sutra of Badarayana (identified with Vyasa). When a sentence begins with the word 'Atha' or 'Now', it implies certain antecedent conditions, consequent of which is this inquiry into the nature of Brahman or Reality. Samkara in his commentary on Brahma-Sutra entitled Brama-Sutra of Bhashya, gave out fourfold qualifications called Sadhana-catustaya, necessary for the aspirant to enter into this inquiry. They are:

Nitya-anitya-vastu-viveka - The ability to discriminate between the transient (i.e., non-eternal), and the eternal.

Iha-amutra-artha-phala-viraga - The absence of desire for securing pleasure or avoiding pain either here or elsewhere.

Sama-damadi-sadhana-sampatti - The attainment of calmness, temperance, spirit of renunciation, fortitude, power of concentration of mind and faith.

Mumuksutva - Lastly, the Desire for Liberation.

The Lotus Symbol

There are no ancient symbols without a deep and philosophical meaning attached to them, such as the Lotus. It is held sacred from the great antiquity by the Aryan Hindus, the Egyptians and the Buddhists after them, revered in China and Japan and adopted as a Christian emblem by the Greek and Latin Churches. Christians have now replaced it with the water Lily. With the Hindus, the Lotus is the emblem of creative powers of nature, through the agency of fire and water (Spirit & Matter). The Lotus or Padma symbolizes both the Cosmos and the Man.

The Lotus-seed contains within itself a perfect miniature of the future plant, which implies that the spiritual prototypes of all things exist in the immaterial world before those things which became materialized on earth.

The fact that the Lotus plant grows up through the water, having its roots in the mud and spreading its flower in the air above.

The Lotus thus typifies the life of Man and also that of the Cosmos. The roots of the Lotus sunk in the mud represents the material life, the stalk passing through the water typifies existence in the Astral world, and the flower floating on the water and opening itself to the sky signifies the Spiritual Being.

The Wheel - Cakara

Cakara is a word with a number of meanings - a wheel, a circle, a discus, the weapon of Vishnu, a cycle or a period of Time, as well as the physiological centers of Prana vitality in the human body (seven Cakaras) As a cycle of Time, a wheel is a symbol of Infinity, as there is no beginning or ending of a circle or wheel. The black colour of the wheel in the symbol represents the Unmanifested portion of the Infinity as opposed to the manifested state of Infinity as symbolized by the Lotus.

AUM

Aum at the top, symbolizes the Highest Reality Brahman. Brahman is the aim and objective of the Hindu Cultural Centre and the aim of the aspirant. Aum is the target.

The Eightfold Path - The Astanga Yoga

To realize the target one has to follow a practical path called Astanga yoga as delineated in the Patanjali's Yoga. This eightfold path is represented by the eight Spokes in the Wheel. The eight steps are:

Yama (Abstentison)

Niyama (Observances)

Asnas (Postures)

Pranayama (Control of Breath)

Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses from the Objects)

Dharana (Fixed Attention)

Dhyana (Meditation)

Samadhi (Concentration)

HCC History

Select passages in the following historical perspective of the HCC have been adapted from a speech originally delivered by Mr. Chetram Singh, a past president of HCC, on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the opening of the Mandir. What follows is an attempt to trace and record the history of the formation of the Hindu Cultural Centre of London Ontario so that we may feel a sense of identity and achievement while paying homage to our roots in this community.

The extract that follows has been edited and the names of the many individual community members who contributed to the organization in so many ways have been removed except for the names of the 4 remaining founding members who still live in London, Ontario. No disrespect has been intended by this action, but it was felt that in this way, we might avoid any mistakes of omission, as there really were a great number of people who contributed their time, energy and dedication to the creation and formation of, the Hindu Cultural Centre of London Ontario. To these individuals we are eternally grateful and we hope that we may take the legacy we have been provided and strive to improve our future and that of our children.

In January 1971, The Hindu Cultural Centre of London Ontario, (HCC), was founded and, with the permission of the University of Western Ontario, religious services were held at the student's lounge basement, of Sommerville House.

There were 8 founding members four of whom were still with us.

These are Mr. H.K. Sharma, Mr. P.L Gupta, Mr. Vijay Kumar, and Mr. R. S. Verma.

In April 1972, HCC became a formal association under the name of the Hindu Cultural Centre.

On June 17, 1972, HCC became a registered Canadian Charitable Organization.

On March 14, 1982 HCC's Constitution was revised.

In 1987, the organization was renting the Legionnaire's Hall in Byron to hold and conduct prayer services.

Also in 1987, after the organization had been in existence for 17 years, the then Board had purchased the 3.2 acres of Land on which the temple now stands for $100,000.

They paid $80,000 on the cost of property and owed $20,000.

A loan was generously offered by a long standing devotee of the HCC in the amount of the $20,000 needed to pay off the loan on the land.

One of the immediate changes that was made, was to move the prayer services from the Legionnaires Hall to the Medway Hall near the Sherwood Forest City mall.

A number of committees were created, such as Building Committee the Finance Committee, and the Festivals Committee and individuals were asked to serve as the Chairs of these committees.

Within months of the new Board assuming office, it was decided that we needed a place of our own, since for 18 years we were holding Sunday services in different halls, many of which were not suitable places for religious worship. Some segment of the community felt that we should build a Community Center, while other wanted a Mandir.

This question was democratically answered at a specially convened meeting of the membership which voted in favour of the Mandir.

The next controversial question was whether or not to include a basement in the construction plans. Some members felt that since HCC had no funds at the time, and a basement would cost about $40,000, we should not bother with the basement and build a one storey building. The wisdom of including a basement at the time of construction was explained and the decision was made to include the basement, in the hopes that God would show us the way to raise the money.

A very prominent London architect, (who also belongs to the Sikh community) was approached to help us design a Mandir, using traditional temple architecture, and to supervise its construction. We were all surprised by his magnanimity when agreed to do so free of charge. Our objective was to construct a building that would accommodate 400 people in the prayer hall with similar space in the basement. The community at that time comprised only about 120 families but it was felt that one had to anticipate the future growth and long term needs of the community.

The estimated cost, assuming that we did the internal work, was $400,000 for 6000 square feet of space, 3000sq ft in the basement, and 3000sq ft in the main prayer hall. The Prayer Hall of the Temple was designed based on the grid and proportions of the Brahm Eshvara temple at Bhuvanseshwar in Orissa.

On June 26, 1989 we held a Sod Turning Ceremony with A Shri Satya Narayan Katha and invited all of the founding members to participate in the ground breaking.

The Board decided to employ a contractor to build the outer shell of the temple and a contracted was chosen from a slate of 4 bidders.

Construction started in October 1989 when the Board started a massive Fund Raising Drive.

The Board installed a Donor Recognition Tree, placed it in the lobby of the Mandir that showed what each individual donated, above a certain amount, on its leaves.

A team of HCC members, worked voluntarily on weekends, holidays and some nights to complete the building, including all of the electrical work which was also done by a member of the Community.

HCC will forever be indebted to a dedicated and determined group of individuals who were assisted by a tireless band of volunteers. Together, these individuals converted the dream of our Mandir, into a reality.

Countless hours were spend negotiating prices with suppliers to ensure that HCC got the best products for the least amount of money.

Significant personal donations to the building fund were made and over $100,000 in donations from the community for the Building Fund were raised. During personal trips to India individuals took the time to select and negotiate the price of the Murtis that we now have in the Mandir. Without the efforts of several key individuals, we would never have been able to complete and pay for this Mandir in just one year.

The Festivals Committee also raised over $60,000 from their various fund raising events. This band of hard work ladies cooked the food themselves for all of their fund raising functions and made a significant contribution to the Building Fund.

On Diwali Day November 18, 1990, just one year after construction had started, the temple was opened by Dr B. Doobay from Toronto, along with key members of the community in London. A plaque was donated and was put at the entrance of the Mandir to show who opened it and when.

At the time of opening, the building, which had cost us around $600,000 inclusive of the cost of volunteer labour, was fully paid for.

In one year we were able to build and completely pay for this Mandir and HCC had no debts. This is even more amazing when one realizes that, at that time, there were only about 120 Hindu families in this area.

You may ask how did we accomplish this? We were able to earn the confidence of the entire community, most of whom donated generously to in cash or kind to this project.

After the Mandir was completed we recruited a well known and respected Pandit from Guyana to serve as our first Pandit. He contributed in a significant way in molding the youths of our community together. He spent countless hours working with, and educating the youths of our community on Hinduism and Indian values. As a result, HCC had a very strong and vibrant youth group at that time.

Since that time, our community has grown and evolved and has enjoyed the firm anchor that the Hindu Cultural Centre organization and premises have provided. We have seen many weddings, events, functions, poojas and ceremonies to commemorate all the stages in the lives of the members of our community. Throughout the years, the Mandir has remained a focal point for our Community and has served as a meeting place where we can share the values that are cherished by our rich traditions.

HCC will forever be grateful to all those who contributed in some form of the other, towards making this Mandir a reality. Because of their efforts, you the new members, have this place of worship. We were only able to build this mandir because the entire community was very united at that time. As the saying goes" United we stand but divided we fall". Our community has grown significantly since 1990, and it is incumbent on you, the new members, to contribute generously to the upkeep of this building. This temple is yours and it can play an important role in helping your children to maintain their religion and culture. If it is not properly maintained, it will gradually deteriorate, as it is starting to do, and your children will not have a place to call their own.

On November 18, 2003 we celebrated 13 years since this Mandir was opened. We hope and pray that with your guidance and assistance, we may all live to enjoy our Mandir for many years to come.
